When used effectively, affirmations can enable us to positively influence our thought patterns, behaviours and how we feel about ourselves. Affirmations facilitate positive change and motivation by:

  • Present Tense:

    • The subconscious mind can not differentiate between the past, present and future. When crafted in the present tense, affirmations send a clear message to the subconscious mind that the desired state is a current reality and not a distant aspiration.
  • Neutral Language:

    • Our brains have to work overtime to filter out the good from affirmations that contain negative words like “can’t” and “won’t”. When written with neutral language, affirmations are non-judgmental and inclusive, avoiding the reinforcement of negative beliefs.
  • Confident Content

    • Confidence in the content empowers individuals to believe in their affirmations, making it easier to internalize and apply them in daily life.

Tailor Affirmations to Individual Needs and Triggers:

In body image work, every journey towards improvement is distinct. Hence, customizing affirmations to tackle specific challenges and triggers becomes essential. Tailoring affirmations with a personal touch ensures they resonate directly with individual experiences, fostering a deeper connection and effectiveness in addressing body image concerns.

Establish a Consistent Practice:

The brain will default to what is familiar, including unhelpful thought patterns. For change to occur in our thoughts, we need repetition to form new neural pathways in our brains.

    • Have your client consider reading affirmation cards aloud each morning to set a positive tone, and revisiting them before bed to solidify a mindset of self-love and progress.
  • Affirmation Wallpaper:

    • Invite your clients to transform their digital space into a sanctuary of positivity by setting an affirmation as their wallpaper on their phone or any other smart device, to receive a daily dose of encouragement and motivation.

Embracing Change – Affirmations in Body Image Work (Client Vignette)

I’m thrilled to share the inspiring journey of a client I had the honour of guiding through their body image transformation. During our sessions, we explored the power of affirmations as a tool for improving their body image, tailoring them to address their unique challenges.

Morning Dressing Empowerment:

To combat the distress of getting dressed in the morning, we crafted the affirmation “My worth transcends the size or shape of my body.” Placed prominently on their mirror, this affirmation served as a daily reminder of their inherent value, independent of appearance. Over time, they found themselves embracing clothing choices that reflected their authentic self, free from the constraints of societal norms.

Encouraging Self-Compassion in Movement Activities:

The affirmation “I honour my body’s abilities and limitations” supported the client in engaging in gentle and joyful movement and connecting with their body in a positive way. The affirmation helped them to challenge their beliefs about moving their body and associate movement with a sense of self-compassion rather than comparison or self-criticism.

Promoting Body Appreciation in Social Settings:

Repeating the affirmations “I radiate confidence and beauty from within” or “I am worthy of love and acceptance just as I am” helped the client navigate social situations with greater self-assurance and body appreciation. By internalizing these affirmations, the client felt more comfortable expressing themselves authentically and engaging confidently in social interactions.
In each situation, affirmations served as powerful allies, guiding the client towards greater self-compassion, confidence, and authenticity in their body image journey.
