This plate method handout is for dietitians and other healthcare professionals that help patients with diabetes, PCOS, weight management and general healthy eating. The purpose is to help provide education on what balanced, healthy meals look like in a way that does not require any counting of calories, points or carbohydrates. Your patients will be educated and empowered without feeling overwhelmed.
The front of the handout is a large graphic of the plate method. The back side has a long list of foods in each category: non-starchy vegetables, meat/protein and carbohydrate-rich foods. The carbohydrate-rich foods are then further broken down into starches/grains, starchy vegetables and fruits.
This visual learning tool has simple graphics to aid in the education on patients with a low literacy level, but is also more comprehensive than other plate method handouts as it has a very extensive list of foods in each category.
This handout will help your patients:
- Understand what a balanced meal looks like
- Classify foods as meats/proteins, starches and non-starchy vegetables
- Simplify grocery shopping
- Create new meal ideas
- Make healthier choices when eating out
- Balance blood sugars without counting carbohydrates
