Iron deficiency is the number one nutrition-related deficiency worldwide, so as RDs we have our work cut out for us! This is what inspired me to create an educational handout that could easily be used in conversations with parents or caregivers of your pediatric patients/clients.
Many parents and caregivers are not aware of the increased risk for iron deficiency in infants, or the signs and symptoms of iron deficiency. By providing this handout to your clients, they will not only understand why iron is important and what could signal an iron deficiency, but also where iron can be found in the diet (both heme and non-heme sources).
The handout details:
- What is iron
- Iron deficiency (groups at higher risk)
- Signs/symptoms of iron deficiency anemia
- Daily iron requirements for children
- Sources of dietary iron
- Top sources of iron by age group (0-4 months, 4-6 months+)
- Iron supplementation information
This 4 page PDF handout does not include branding or logos. Please share with parents or caregivers of your pediatric patients/clients to reduce the chance of iron-deficiency in children.
