Teen Client Education Handout BUNDLE | Gender-Neutral, Body-Neutral Nutrition Client Education Handouts for Teenagers and Adolescents ages 13-18

This product bundle features the handouts that I use the most often in clinic with my teen clients! Topics include: general nutrition, sports nutrition, weight gain, mental health and nutrition, iron deficiency anemia, and meal ideas! 

Includes 16 ready-to-use English-language handouts specifically created for working with adolescent clients. This product includes the following handouts, which can each be used independently or combined with other educational materials. If your educational philosophy does not include teaching your adolescent clients how to incorporate inexpensive convenience foods into a well-balanced diet, some of these handouts may not be for you. 

  • Hydration for Teen Athletes: This handout features hydration recommendations for before, during, and after athletic activity alongside generalized hydration recommendations for non-athletic activities. The handout also features an explanation of beverages that are not ideal for hydration, and a brief list of symptoms of dehydration. 
  • Fueling for Teen Athletes: This handout includes recommendations for eating well before, during, and after athletic activity. The handout includes a list of common “Sweet and Salty Carbohydrate Snacks” and “High Protein Snacks” as examples to use when selecting snacks for before, during, and after athletic activity. 
  • 60+ Meal Ideas for Teens: Includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner ideas incorporating 3-5 food groups, and ideas for utilizing convenience foods as part of a balanced meal.
  • 25 Snack Ideas for Teens: Includes ideas and recommendations for pairing carbohydrates, proteins, fruits, and vegetables to create balanced snacks. Also discusses adequate hydration and includes recommendations for pairing snack foods like cookies or chips with more nutritious items as part of a balanced snack.
  • Nutrition for Teens: This handout discusses nutrition goals for healthy, growing adolescents. Describes the different macronutrient categories and examples of foods in each, the role of nutrients in the body, the importance of eating regularly throughout the day, and generalized hydration recommendations.
  • Meal Ideas for Busy Teens: This hand out provides balanced breakfast ideas, easy lunch suggestions, and DIY dinner suggestions for teens with limited cooking knowledge. Also includes a snack suggestion list recommending that teens pair combinations of foods together for energy and mood.
  • Understanding Nutrition and Mental Health: A handout discussing generalized nutrition goals for adolescent mental and physical health and wellbeing. Handout discusses ways that nutrition and food impact different aspects of mental health and the role of nutrients in the body.
  • Mental Health and Appetite: A handout describing common ways appetite and eating can be impacted by mental illness and mental health medication. Includes a brief discussion of the impact of marijuana on appetite and recommends clients inform their mental health care team of ALL medications and substances they use. 
  • What about Eating Disorders?: A handout discussing common symptoms and risk factors for developing eating disorders. Describes disordered eating and different types of eating disorders. 
  • Nutrition Advice for Mental Illness: A handout giving gentle nutrition and lifestyle advice for teens struggling with mental illness. Handout recommends clients prioritize eating regularly throughout the day, hydration, sleep, choose gentle movement, and stay connected with their mental health care team. 
  • Weight Gain for Teens: Includes discussion of the role of nutrients in the body, generalized recommendations for teens interested in weight gain/bulking, ideas for teens who experience early satiety or low appetite, and information for teens about realistic expectations for weight gain and body changes. 
  • High Protein, High Energy: Includes lists of high-protein and high-energy foods and ideas for nutrient and energy-dense snacks for teens. Also includes a brief definition of Calories which de-emphasizes the importance of Calorie-counting for generally healthy teens.
  • Iron and Anemia for Teens – An introductory handout that explains the role of iron in the body, common causes and symptoms of anemia, and common treatments for anemia, including nutrition and medical interventions.
  • Iron-Rich Food List – A list of animal and plant-based iron sources, serving sizes, and the amount of iron per serving in milligrams. Also includes examples of Vitamin C-rich foods and Iron+Vitamin C food pairings to maximize absorption.
  • Iron-Rich Snacks List – A supplemental list of common snack and convenience foods, serving sizes, and the amount of iron per serving in milligrams. 
  • Iron Supplements – An informational handout discussing iron supplements, including common instructions for taking iron supplements and recommendations for avoiding upset stomach or constipation.

Handouts feature a blue/green color scheme, teen-friendly, gender-neutral, and weight-neutral language, and offer age-appropriate explanations and examples throughout.
