As a Hospice Dietitian, I assist in making patients comfortable by reducing dysphagia symptoms. These handouts were drafted to help explain to families the risks, benefits and practical steps for initiating a dysphagia diet.  This bundle includes one (front and back) page for each of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) diet textures: Soft/Bite-Sized, Minced/Moist, and Pureed/Extremely Thick.

Each handout contains sections on the following:

  • What is Dysphagia? – using everyday terms for easy understanding
  • A list of common symptoms
  • Diet Texture Standardization – a handy chart outlines the differences between the new IDDSI vs the old National Dysphagia Diet (NDD). This is helpful for families or facilities that are confused about terminology.
  • Food Specification – outlines in short sentences what the appropriate food texture should be
  • Food Selection Guide – a table explains preparation techniques for each food group
