Cow’s milk is a great source of essential nutrients and can be especially important in meeting a toddler’s protein and calorie needs. When a child is having gastrointestinal symptoms, often cows milk elimination trial will be a recommended intervention, and parents are left without education of the best substitutes to give their child the essential nutrients they need!
This handout includes an informational chart of the different types of milk (cows, soy, oat, pea, almond, coconut and combination milks), the nutritional information (calories, protein and fat per serving), and specific notes that help in decision making of what milk to offer when cow’s milk is not an option due to allergies, intolerances or family preference.
This 1 page handout includes-
- Common brand names of each type of milk
- Protein, Fat and Calorie information per serving
- Easy identifiable symbol on milk choices that are good options for 12-24 months of age for higher fat for brain development, or children of any age with higher calorie needs.
This is a great handout to guide a conversation with families and give them to keep and reference later!

I like this resource because it’s easy to understand and has great information. I will use this resource with patients.
Great resource! Only improvement would be to add calcium for each of the sections.
