I created this handout after being unsatisfied with other high/low phosphorus lists found on the internet. Many of them do not take into account organic vs. inorganic phosphorus. This handout contains two pages:
- Low phosphorus foods – encourages intake of fresh/less processed foods and plant-proteins.
- High phosphorus foods – focuses on foods that contain phosphorus additives to limit with CKD.
The handout introduces the concept of phosphorus bioavailability and discusses how to locate added phosphorus on the food label. This handout is appropriate for any stage of CKD including those on dialysis.Â
