Potassium levels are often elevated in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). This has traditionally been attributed solely to a high-potassium diet.  While diet plays a role, many non-dietary factors, such as constipation or even certain medications, can also impact potassium levels.

Our new patient education handout, “Reasons Your Potassium Might Be High” helps clear up patient confusion.

What It Covers:

  • Common dietary causes of high potassium.
  • Non-dietary factors, such as medications, constipation, and metabolic acidosis.
  • Importance of portion sizes: small portions of high-potassium foods can be manageable, while excessive portions of low-potassium foods may be risky.

The handout features a whole page of visuals that show different portion sizes of foods and their potassium content, making it easier for patients to understand.

Use this handout to improve your patients’ understanding of potassium management and help them achieve better health outcomes.
