If your educational philosophy does not include teaching your adolescent clients how to incorporate inexpensive convenience foods into a well-balanced diet, some of these handouts may not be for you. 

This product includes the following handouts, which can each be used independently or combined with other educational materials.

Also discusses adequate hydration and includes recommendations for pairing snack foods like cookies or chips with more nutritious items as part of a balanced snack.
  • 20 Breakfast Ideas for Teens: Includes a description of the role of nutrients in the body as well as 20 breakfast ideas incorporating 3-5 food groups and ideas for utilizing convenience foods as part of a balanced meal. 
  • Lunch Box Ideas for Hungry Teens: Includes a description of the role of nutrients in the body and a few simple lunch box recipes for packing nutritious, filling lunches to eat at work or school.
  • Iron-Rich Food List – A list of animal and plant-based iron sources, serving sizes, and the amount of iron per serving in milligrams. Also includes examples of Vitamin C-rich foods and Iron+Vitamin C food pairings to maximize absorption.
  • Iron-Rich Snacks List – A supplemental list of common snack and convenience foods, serving sizes, and the amount of iron per serving in milligrams. 
  • Calcium Recommendations: A list of calcium-rich food items, including dairy and non-dairy food products. Provides the current DRI for calcium for both adolescents and adults, a nutrition label example to demonstrate where calcium is listed on a product label, and a section discussing calcium supplements as a secondary measure if calcium needs cannot be reached through food.
  • Vitamin D Food List: A list of Vitamin D-rich food items, including dairy and non-dairy food products. Provides the current DRI for Vitamin D for both adolescents and adults, a nutrition label example to demonstrate where Vitamin D is listed on a product label. Includes a section discussing Vitamin D supplements and sunlight exposure as other sources of Vitamin D.
  • Fiber-Rich Foods List – A list of high-fiber foods, including fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, and some common snack foods. Includes portion size and amount of fiber in grams.
  • Fiber-Rich Meal Ideas – Easy fiber-rich breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack ideas for teens with limited cooking knowledge. Also includes a sample nutrition label highlighting where to look for the amount of fiber in a product.
  • High Protein, High Energy: Includes lists of high-protein and high-energy foods and ideas for nutrient and energy-dense snacks for teens. Also includes a brief definition of Calories which de-emphasizes the importance of Calorie-counting for generally healthy teens.

Handouts feature a blue/green color scheme, teen-friendly, gender-neutral, and weight-neutral language, and offer age-appropriate explanations and examples throughout.
