As dietitians, I understand that most of us have been taught to encourage whole food. I also understand that we have to be flexible and meet the patient where they are. I have created this handout as an option for people who may choose to buy frozen meals. There can be many reasons for this and we can at least guide them in making better choices.

This handout helps the patient to understand how to read the food label and make the best choice for them!

Who Is This For?

  • Patients who work 40+ hours/week and have little time to dedicate to cooking
  • Patients who don’t know how to cook or just aren’t interested in cooking
  • Patients with limited kitchen appliances
  • Older men who may not know how to cook, etc.

What Problem Does This Handout Solve?

  • Makes meal planning less stressful
  • Helps people to understand “what’s in their food” by reading the food label vs running through a drive-thru. The handout reviews recommendations for the following:
    • Sodium
    • Total fat
    • Saturated fat
    • Fiber
    • Added sugars
  • Allows people to move at their own pace as they make changes to their eating habits
  • For people struggling with meal planning, a healthier frozen meal once per day can make it easier in the beginning

Key Features:

  • Bold beautiful colors to draw the attention of your patient/client
  • Easy to read
  • Simple and “to-the-point” tips
  • Simple label reading education
  • Includes list of 6+ recommended brands (Updated July 14, 2021)
    • The brands listed can be found in stores like Wal-Mart, Publix, Target, and Whole Foods
    • Brands NOT specific meals from the brand are listed
  • Note at the bottom to “Ask your dietitian” for further guidance
  • Blank sections for you to write your own recommendations for protein and carbohydrates. You can write in grams, ounces or whatever your preference is!
