Student athletes live very busy, active lives! Children and adolescents, as well as adults, are susceptible to messages of weight loss and low calorie diets. These messages are especially harmful for young athletes whose energy needs are higher to support growth and an active lifestyle!

This handout will provide a basic understanding of the importance of balanced meals and snacks and give a sample meal plan for an athlete that includes carbohydrates, protein, fat, fruits and vegetables at each meal. It can be provided to athletes as well as parents, coaches or trainers for education purposes.
