Part of my Gut Health Guide series, this 2-page handout provides dietary and lifestyle guidance for managing acid reflux, including:
- Limiting key acidic foods
- Avoiding foods that reduce pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter
- Meal spacing, sizing and composition
- Lifestyle habits and practices that can reduce symptoms
- Types of medications often prescribed for reflux and importance of regular usage as well as a tapering off plan
- Foods to emphasize to prevent or reduce symptoms
Page 2 of the document also outlines different types of reflux (GERD and LPR), and provides information on different symptoms and evaluation for each, and includes education on possible consequences of untreated reflux.
The handout can be used for clinical nutrition support and/or adult nutrition education, as well as education for RDs who may not be familiar with the complexity of different types of reflux.
