Children are exposed to new produce by investigating foods with their senses – what does it smell like? look like? feel like? and taste like? Children can draw a picture of their chosen food and give it a silly name.

Next, children are encouraged to have an adult help them cut out various fruits and vegetables and place them into one of two categories: I’ve tried this and I haven’t tried this YET. Children will then select one fruit and one vegetable they haven’t yet tried and ask their parent to put it on their weekly shopping list. They can then complete another food scientist handout with those new foods. This can be continued until all produce have been tried at least once.

TIP: Encourage parents to laminate, cover in packing tape, or place in a page protector so they only have to print once. The kiddos can use dry erase markers to complete the handout. Simply wipe off with a paper towel for the next food!
