This toolkit is intended for Dietitian’s to use with athletes >16yrs old. Ideal use for competitive endurance athletes (e.g., runners, triathletes, cyclists). It can be used to help guide athletes, clinicians, coaches and parents on discussion around underfuelling in sport, and identify actionable next steps to improve health and performance.

The extensive 8 page handout on RED-S, The Athlete Triad, and Low Energy Availability can be used with individual athletes or teams, including team based screening for low energy availability. It is applicable for use in male and female athletes.

The toolkit includes an Excel spreadsheet energy availability calculator. You will need to enter the following information for accurate results

  1. Daily energy intake – determined by food record analysis.
  2. Daily exercise energy expenditure – determined by METs or heart rate data on personal wearable device.
  3. Fat Free Mass – determined by a body composition assessment.
