Get your copy of this new BLOOD WORK SCHEDULE for your bariatric patients! (Spanish version included)
“How often do I need to check my blood work?” This is one of the questions that many of my bariatric patients would ask me after bariatric surgery. Did you know that they are to monitor their vitamin/mineral status every 3 months?Â
Unfortunately, after bariatric surgery, the number of people that has postoperative micronutrient deficiencies increases while monitoring of potential deficiencies decreases. Many patients do not follow up with their surgeon, primary care physician, and dietitian as often as they should. As a result, they often forget or stop taking their vitamin and mineral supplements, resulting in nutrient deficiencies.
After laboratory draw, if the patient has nutrient deficiencies, it is recommended to monitor status every 3 months until the deficiency is corrected and stable. Performing nutrition-focused physical examination is also recommended to assess for any physical signs and symptoms of deficiencies. Don’t forget to ask your patients appropriate questions to fully assess for possible deficiencies.
Use this handout to remind your patients when to check their blood work and which serum markers to focus on to avoid nutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery. The schedule list is for pre-surgery, 3 months post-surgery, 6-12 months post-surgery, and annually.
