Magic of Phosphate Binders

Phosphorus is crucial for bone growth and mineralization, as well as for acid-base balance. However, elevated serum phosphorus increases the risk of mineral and bone disorders, and is an independent risk factor for heart disease and mortality for our patients on dialysis.

Phosphate binders play a crucial role in managing serum levels in dialysis patients by reducing phos absorption from food in the GI tract. However, they are only beneficial if taken correctly and consistently.

KNI’s “Magic of Phosphate Binders” handout is here to help your patients effectively learn:

  • WHICH phosphate binders are prescribed (with pictures for easier identification!)
  • WHY they are important
  • HOW they work
  • WHEN to take them
  • Foods to eat and foods to avoid — all complete with images for an easy-to-understand and well-rounded nutrition education session!

This handout also features a “Hidden PHOS Wordsearch” to facilitate active learning and identification of hidden phos in everyday foods.
