Phosphorus is crucial for bone growth and mineralization, as well as for acid-base balance. However, elevated serum phosphorus increases the risk of mineral and bone disorders, and is an independent risk factor for heart disease and mortality for our patients on dialysis.

As recommended by the current KDOQI Guidelines, it is important to consider the bioavailability of phosphorus sources as part of our nutrition education. Phosphorus bioavailability and absorption varies based on its source:

  • 20-50% absorption from plant sources
  • 40-60% absorption from animal sources
  • Up to 100% absorbed from inorganic phosphorus additives

At KNI, we focus on identifying and avoiding inorganic phosphorus additives as a clinically impactful skill and strategy. Therefore, we present our “Inspect for Phos” handout to support you in teaching your patients:

  • Where to identify phos additives on a food label
  • “To Limit” examples of food WITH phos additives
  • “Great Choices” examples of comparable foods WITHOUT phos additives

Empower your patients to take control of their phosphorus management today! This handout is
also available in English, Spanish, Tagalog and Chinese!
