CHINESE Protein Powerhouse

Patients undergoing dialysis treatments are at high risk for protein energy wasting because of multiple reasons including inadequate intake, inflammatory catabolic processes, protein losses in dialysate, acidosis, and many others.

The KDOQI Clinical Practice Guideline for Nutrition 2020 recommended up to 1.0-1.2 g/kg body weight for patients on dialysis to maintain stable nutritional status. Ensuring adequate protein intake preserves muscle mass and strength, improves wound healing, prevents malnutrition and infections, as well as enhance patients’ overall quality of life.

Optimize your nutrition education on proteins using KNI’s “Protein Powerhouse” handout, which outlines:

  • WHY protein is important — enhancing patient understanding on the reasons behind our recommendations help to improve compliance
  • HOW to add more protein with easy examples — empower patients to start making clinically significant changes to improve outcomes

As always, all our messages utilize easy to understand visuals. We also provide space for you to personalize your patients’ protein recommendations.

This handout is now available in English, Spanish, Tagalog, and Chinese!
