With this handout, we’re diving into the topic of eating during dialysis. We know it’s a challenge to maintain good nutrition when dialysis takes up a significant part of our patients’ day and disrupts their meal schedules. However, it’s also a great opportunity to incorporate a nourishing snack to maintain some normalcy in their routines while optimizing nutrition.
While there are risks associated with eating during dialysis, such as postprandial hypotension and hygiene concerns, numerous studies have highlighted benefits, including improved nutritional status, mitigating catabolism, and enhanced quality of life.
As dietitians, we have guidelines to help patients eat safely during dialysis. Our “Eating at Dialysis” handout offers practical tips on food choices, foods to avoid, and examples to make it easy for patients to follow.
